The Humboldt Herd Area (HA) is located approximately 30 miles south of Winnemucca, and is about 431,544 acres of public and private land. BLM states:“The Humboldt HA was not designated for the long term management of the wild horses in the Sonoma-Gerlach Management Framework Plan (SG-MFP) due to the checkerboard land pattern found within the HA and therefore, is not managed for wild horses and burros.” The original “zeroing out” of Humbolt was in 1985. A map can be viewed HERE BLM “estimates” about 282 wild horses. BLM will remove 100 in this operation. If you check this map you will see that much of the area where Humbolt lies was once part of the original areas managed for wild horses and many of these areas were “zeroed out.” See map HERE
A total of 37 have been captured and received at Palomino Valley Center to date. You an read BLM “gather” reports here: http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/wfo/blm_programs/wild_horses_and_burros/Humboldt_Herd_Area/gatreports.html
