There is a lot going on.

Normally we would have posted the “week in review” from both ongoing roundups in Utah and Colorado. But we have had to shuffle team members around so one of our volunteers could drive over 12 hours to get home to evacuate from the Bug/Freds Mountain fire (she then helped others that had no trailer get their horses to safety… and she has had to evacuate a second time due to the Stallion fire).

Palomino Valley Center is near where our volunteer evacuated to the first time.

We are waiting for Palomino Valley Center (PVC) to issue an official statement. In the past PVC has not evacuated the facility and has simply relied on the defensible space around the pens.

Noon, 8/12

Our volunteer has passed the facility on her way back in with an empty trailer to help others.

Dogskins

There are Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in the path of the fire: Dogskins, Granite and Flanigan. BLM now calls the area the “North Complex.” On July 31, BLM approved a roundup plan for this area.

Bible Springs, Utah

29 (7 stallions, 13 mares, and 9 foals) were captured today.

Many of you remember that at the Bible Springs operation there was no vet onsite and the BLM did not take proactive measure to even stock supplies for foals to address the deficit.

If you have been following the daily update page we even wrote an “explainer” about the hind-gut of a foal and how you cannot simply feed it hay and water (the same thing we have been telling them onsite).

We are happy to report they are now giving any “orphan” or distressed foals foal lac (formula) in a bucket at trap as can wait hours to be transported to holding. In holding they are now getting foal lac and special care. (A foal lost the day before was found and they immediately gace it the supplies that are now onsite before airlifted it by chopper to the Delta facility where a pre-approved adopter would pick it up.)

We wanted to be able to “say something nice” (as BLM constantly says we do not say anything nice, even though we do.. but usually after days and days and days of having to push them to fix something). However, yesterday they killed a stallion for having a “weepy eye” with no actual vet exam… after running him by chopper and transporting him in the dust where it would be easy for a foreign body to get in there and simply need time to clear. So… the moment of “thank you” for finally getting foal lac at trap passed fast.

Piceance, Utah

36 wild horses (15 stallions, 13 mares, and 8 foals) were captured.

Access to document and strange reporting by BLM are the most obvious concerns at Piceance. Usually when BLM notes a bodyscore “3” they are saying a horse is in poor shape. At Piceance they are calling the horses “3-4” and saying “good condition.” Before the roundup the horses were 4-6. Maybe BLM simply has no standard scale or does not understand the scale (a common problem). At Callaghan we had to go into body score as BLM starting saying “2” and they did not seem to know what they really looks like.

The horses came in wet with sweat.

BLM approves a new plan for Jackson Mountains in Nevada months after putting it on the roundup schedule… sliding surgical sterilization (spaying) back on the menu.

Our offsite team has begun writing the appeal. We have only 30 days from the date the plan is approved to file.

BLM approves new plan for the Red Desert in Wyoming

BLM apparently decided to put a nonsensical public relations statement in the title: Saving Wild Horses from Starvation, Protecting America’s Public Lands

Devil’s Garden

Several of you have asked about litigation at Devil’s Garden.

That case is entering the final briefing stage next month. We should have a final ruling before the end of the year. In this case the court has consistently expressed that we have a “high likelihood of success on the merits” of the case.
