Jackson Roundup Update (and BLM Extends Comment period on wild horse warehouse)

The BLM captured 18 wild horses in 2 runs yesterday. A 4-year-old bay mare was euthanized for having an abscess (we can not tell you where that abscess was).

55 wild horses have been captured at this operation. (You can access WHE team reports ongoing at Jackson here)

Area of new facility. WHE team grabbed a photo on way to Jackson roundup.

Today is the last to comment on New (Private) Facility

EDITED: BLM has extended the comment period. The Bureau of Land Management, Humboldt River Field Office (HRFO) will be extending the public comment period on the Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) for the Winnemucca Off-range Corrals (ORC). The comment period began on September 2 and will now conclude on Friday, October 1, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. (PDT).

The new facility is located north of Winnemucca NV. Jackson Mountain roundup and the off-limits facility already in NV, Broken Arrow (aka Indian Lakes), are example of what BLM NV believes is respecting the First Amendment and the public “right-to-know.” When Broken Arrow opened it had the highest death rates of short-term facilities in the nation. Since, BLM has pulled all facility reports off-line.

Broken Arrow tour 2019. BLM has not opened the doors of Broken Arrow since covid hit, not once. But that have used the off-limits facility for intake including the “IUD mares” coming in from Four Mile this week.

From BLM press release:

A 15-day public comment period on the preliminary environmental assessment is set for September 2-17, 2021

The public is encouraged to review the PEA, located at https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2015489/570, and provide substantive comments or concerns, prior to 4:30 p.m. (PDT) on September 17, 2021. All comments received will be fully considered and evaluated for preparation of the final EA. The technical point of contact is Krystle Wengreen, Wild Horse and Burro Specialist, kwengreen@blm.gov, (208) 329-4534.

If there are issues providing substantive comments to e-planning, comments and concerns may be emailed to wfoweb@blm.gov with “Winnemucca ORC” in the subject line or sent in writing to the BLM Humboldt River Field Office, ATTN: Off Range Corral Project, C/O BLM Nevada, 5100 E. Winnemucca Blvd, Winnemucca NV 89445. Hardcopies of the EA are available upon request from the BLM Winnemucca District Office

This facility is another “off-limits-to-public-view- privately run” facility like Broken Arrow (Indian Lakes). The agency has several of these facilities that inhibit the ability of the public to monitor wild horses and help with adoptions. Many of these facilities have shown serious infractions of basic humane conditions and higher death rates than BLM run open facilities.

Please send a fast comment by clicking here and then click the “participate now” button next to the EA on the BLM site.

Or email comments to: wfoweb@blm.gov

Put “Winnemucca ORC” in the sunbject line.

You need to craft your own letter for it to count as a distinct comment letter.

Comments are due today, Sept 17

Please add these points to your comments:

  • BLM should not be allowed to create any more facilities that do not allow weekly visitation.
  • Shelter should be adequate to stop wind and provide shade for all horses/burros. Each pen should have multiple shelters to allow less dominant animals access.
  • 4000 wild horse/burro capacity on 100 acres is not adequate and is inhumane.
  • All shipping manifests, both receiving and outgoing, should be published on a BLM web portal.
  • All deaths, injuries and vet reports should be published on a BLM web portal.
