Wild horses and pronghorn search for water after backdoor deals turn off historically available sources during drought.
Steve Ellis, who worked as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) district manager of the Lakeview Oregon District and late as BLM Deputy Director (national) under Sally Jewell, is in the running to lead the BLM under President-elect Joe Biden.
Since 2017 we have not had one Director of the BLM. We have had a revolving door of “acting with authority of director” that include such individuals as John Ruhs, Brian Steed and, lately, William Perry Pendley.
Will a new administration bring the changes we need for wild horses? Not if the reports of Steve Ellis heading the BLM are true.
“Steve Ellis sat right next to me at a meeting back in 2015. With a straight face he stated that the public and Congress do not really understand wild horses. But he said he could easily sell spaying because Congress will understand dogs and cats.” said LLeigh, President of Wild Horse Education. “I commented that denigration of the intelligence of the public, and Congress, would do what I can not do; unite advocacy against him.”
Steve Ellis served as the Deputy Director to Sally Jewell as she toured the West coddling profiteers of public lands as the talk of protecting the Greater Sage Grouse began. Under Jewell, and Ellis, sage grouse were set up for failure. Over the last 4 years even those minimal protections were eradicated.
Ellis has a record of repeatedly selling environmental protections, species protections, and wild horses, off to the the winds of politics.
“We are truly saddened, but not surprised, that the top pick to run BLM wont be someone with a record of standing strong for environmental issues under pressure.”

What you can do today to help in the fight.
Please take action to demand Congress defund any roundups where the BLM has failed to create open and transparent management planning. Click HERE.
Call the Senate switchboard and ask for your rep. Demand that all actions against wild horses and burros halt until William Perry Pendley leaves the BLM. His tenure was ruled illegal and BLM is still moving an agenda forward for Pendley’s former law clients. Switchboard (202) 224-3121
