House Votes to Slaughter Wild Horses

(Washington, DC) Today the United States House of Representatives Subcommittee on Appropriations  approved an amendment to the fiscal year 2018 budget that will send tens of thousands of wild horses to their deaths.

Using an image from 2015 of wild horses in Cold Creek Nevada, Chris Stewart  (R-UT) pushed for the slaughter of tens of thousands of wild horses claiming that the vast majority of wild horses are in dire straights. Cold Creek is an area of shared jurisdiction between the BLM and Forest Service where federal employees shirked responsibility and created an emergency situation.

Ken Calvert (R-CA) said this is euthanasia, not slaughter, an outright fabrication. He stated there was no language that allowed horses to be sold to slaughter. Lining wild horses up to take a bullet to the head by the thousands, no matter who pulls the trigger, is slaughter.

Mark Amodei (R-NV) is well known for his ties to the livestock industry and has been instrumental in helping livestock operators that break the law and avoid full penalty. He was vocal as he forwarded the agenda of slaughtering wild horses desired by the same livestock operators he supports.

“If the credibility on this issue is judged by testimony given, it should be obvious that this is not about truth, but politics. Many people forget it is not against the law for a Congressman to lie.

“Somehow wild horses are starving to death on ranges that cows get fat on and the fuel load is so high the West is burning.

I travel the West, non-stop, and document our ranges. The vast majority of wild horses are doing well and livestock operators are also happy with the extra forage own the range now that we are out of drought.

This entire process is filled with multiple instances of perjurious conduct and absolutely no common sense. Even the representatives in the room that opposed slaughtering wild horses were woefully unarmed to fight back. Our wild horses are going to die in a game of ‘who has the biggest public relations firm’ that has no integrity.

“I have had multiple journalists on the range this year. All of them are struggling with editors buried under the ‘daily toilet seat tweet’ and serious issues regarding public land management, America’s public wealth, can not get into the forefront. Resource Advisory Councils (RACs) were closed at the end of April and there has been no public debate or official record to contribute to.

“I have witnessed tens of thousands of wild horses removed from the range in the last decade. I know more than half of the horses sitting in those holding pens, I have seen their eyes. To know that they will die because federal managers, sworn to serve the public and know the truth, are afraid to come forward because this movement can be violent is breaking my heart.”

Many in the West resent federal authority on public land. They resent grazing regulations, road restrictions and the jurisdiction of federal land managers over wild horses, stopping “mustanging” the capture and sale to slaughter of wild horses. In 2014 the “Grass March” took a petition to Washington DC over resentment of grazing restrictions during drought as they threatened to run cattle on the range, in spite of the closure. The petition delivered demanded the district manager be fired that closed the battered range in drought and that wild horses be slaughtered.

The bill must pass a full vote in the House and Senate before it becomes law.

We urge members of the public to call their representatives.
