Roundup Just Announced: Beginning Sunday!

BLM just announced a roundup to begin Sunday! Our team is scrambling to get into the field and change schedules.

The operation targets 300 wild horses BLM said are residing outside of the Antelope HMA and Moriah HA north of Ely, Nevada. BLM is saying it is an “emergency due to severe drought conditions and limited available forage.” Citing the wild horses are “off-HMA and HA” (meaning they are off legally designated habitat), BLM does not note that this is a traditional seasonal movement seen every year since before the 1971 Act exacerbated by increasing disturbance from mining and livestock.

Wild horses will be transported to Palomino Valley Center north of Reno. The press release states specifically on March 1 (this may be a miscommunication).

The last roundup in the Moral area was in October 2023, (fiscal year 2024) when 441 wild horses were captured and shipped to an off-limits to the public facility in Sutherland, Utah.

One of our main concerns during capture this time of year is that mares are heavily pregnant and foaling does actually begin in most ranges in Ely in February.

Our team is scrambling to be onsite while other team members are working to address the new roundup plan just finalized at Callaghan, taking legal action.

Every mile we travel to cover roundups or assess a herd, every court case we bring, every win, every action we take is only possible because of your support
