Owyhee “Emergency” Roundup Ends

We are starting the update with the “last horse.” One of the wild horses in the last group that had tried to evade the helicopter. One of the last to be rapidly loaded onto a trailer and removed out of site… forever.

BLM simply calls this “1 Stallion self released from the trap without injury.”

When we watch the video above it is nearly a miracle that he did not break a leg as they got tangled in the rails.

When he gets free he tres to head back home. BLM had opened gates, driving horses into the area from a grazing allotment West of the burn area (not inside the burn). Either the gate was already closed or, because he is now in unfamiliar territory does not know where it is. He then comes all the way back looking for a break in the fence. When he finds none he disappears out of sight into territory unknown to him.

UPDATE 2/4: Now that the roundup has ended BLM seems to be changing the reason. Now they are telling the news it was “overpopulation.” Reminder: BLM announced this roundup with only 3 days notice claiming it was an “emergency” due to no food in the fire area. Perhaps the footage collected by observers, well outside the burn area and of wild horses in amazing body condition, has them needing to change the narrative?

The “emergency roundup” where we saw no indication of any emergency at all… has ended.

Captured: 180 (87 Stallions, 93 Mares, and 0 Foals)  . Please note, this is BLMs breakdown. It appears at this specific roundup BLM is calling everything over 4 months old an adult. At other operations BLM will call any horse under six months old a foal. BLM has no clear cut designation.

Shipped to the off-limits to the public Winnemucca facility: 173 (82 Stallions, 91 Mares, and 0 Foals)

Deaths: 7    Please note: The last two days of the operation BLM began shipping from the range directly to the facility. When they do that the “found dead” or “died from colic overnight” do not appear in the daily stats. We will not know the actual death toll until our Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests come back.

The first death was a chestnut foal, probably 4-5 months old. BLM blamed the death on a degenerative pre-existing condition and calling it a “yearling stud.” The foal is in the featured day 1 video. Day 2 deaths (according to BLM) Roan Mare, age 15, Large Abscess (right hip, Sorrel Stud, age 10, Severe Arthritis (right rear leg). Of important note is that mares in this area have been treated with GonaCon known for causing abscesses that may persist years after application. We do not know if this is related as BLM has provided no documentation and probably failed to document in violation of CAWP documentation requirements prior to putting her down. BLM said “Bay stud, age 12, Lameness, Severe Arthritis (right knee), Bay stud, age 10, Lameness, Severe Arthritis (left knee)

Above: Run 1. You can see clearly that BLM is simply counting all horses as adults no matter their age.

Above: The next run we see a very pregnant mare and what looks like last years daughter lag behind. What appears to be her stallion and another mare break from the other band before ther band is driven to trap.

In the last run of the roundup we see the dark stud and the three mares driven into the trap. This is the stud that escapes the trap (at the top of the page) and is now not only without his family…. but because BLM shut the gate (probably because the cows are out already as seen in in yesterdays video) and he cannot go home. He is now in an area he does not know.

Our team has requested a timely tour of the “off-limits” facility as is standard practice. There has not been a timely tour to check on the welfare of wild horses or burros post-capture since 2013. A tour 3 months from now will not allow assessment of post-capture conditions. However, it will allow us to generally assess the facility and, hopefully, help find some of these amazing wild horses homes before they get shipped out, sold, and land on some killpen page holding them hostage for “bail out” from rescues.

Our team went to the only tour ever offered of this facility since it began taking in wild horses in 2024.

Every mile we travel to cover roundups or assess a herd, every court case we bring, every win, every action we take is only possible because of your support. Thank you for standing with us as we strive for justice, mercy and freedom. We cannot do this without you.
