From documenting roundups, exposing abuse, driving policy change through the Courtroom and Congress, Wild Horse Education is at the vanguard. Our litigation opened roundups to daily observation. Our litigation drove the creation of a draft welfare policy (and now we are pushing to get it formalized to gain enforceability). Our documentation has been featured in film, news stories and seen around the world raising awareness and spurring legislation such as the Wild Horse Protection Act that would phase out the use of helicopters.
Most injuries and deaths are preventable. It is an absurdity that we have to fight for basic and enforceable rules. After over 40 years with no welfare policy at all, under pressure from intensive litigation draft welfare standards were created. But the BLM and the Forest Service dug in their heels and have refused to take the final steps to formalize welfare rules and create enforceability and consequence.
In the New Year the Wild Horse and Burro Act is set to turn 55 years old. Our goal is to increase the pressure and gain the long overdue enforceable welfare policy once. Enough is enough.
Averaging 12%, or 1 in 9 wild horses or burros dead, roundups and the first months in captivity are the #1 cause of death. After winter roundups of wild horses and for wild burros the statistic can rise over 20%.
