BLM gas captured a total of 1869 Wild Horses (753 Stallions, 760 Mares, and 356 Foals) in the ongoing Callaghan Complex roundup. All of those wild horses were taken from the South Shoshone Herd Management Area (HMA).
About 700 of the captive wild horses were sent to Palomino Valley Center north of Reno during the beginning of the operation. The rest are being sent to the off-limits to the public facility in Fallon, NV.
BLM had a glitch in reporting numbers during this operation. Complete information will not be available until Freedom of Information Act requests ae fully answered.
Deaths: 6, Day 1, during active trapping: A sorrel filly foal was reported to have been kicked by another horse at temporary holding and broke a leg. Day 2, during shipping and holding: 3 y/o, Bay, Mare – Acute/Sudden, broken neck , 3 m/o, Sorrel, filly – Acute/Sudden, indicators consistent with colic. (3 day lapse in reporting) Day 7: BLM reported they euthanized: “10 y/o, Bay Mare, Chronic/Pre-existing, missing and eye, 3 y/o , Bay Mare, Chronic/Pre-existing, missing an eye.” Day 8: “3 m/o, Bay Mare, Chronic/Pre-existing, respiratory infection” for some reason BLM did not want to type the word “foal” and just called her a “mare.” Day 10: 3 m/o, Bay mare, died unexpected, undiagnosed. Day 12: 3 m/o, Bay, mare – Died: chronic, undiagnosed/Unknown, Day 13: 3 y/o, Bay, mare, died, traumatic head injury, 2 y/o, Bay, mare, died, undiagnosed.
Day 12: 239 (94 Stallions, 104 Mares, and 41 Foals). Again, there was abysmal access. Throughout this operation there has not been one day where handling at trap or at the temporary corrals has been permitted.
Another foal died: 3 m/o, Bay, mare – Died: chronic, undiagnosed/Unknown. BLM has placed this death into the non gather-related category even though they do not know why the foal died (as they did with the previous death)
BLM has put out an DNA for comment concerning another mine expansion on the east side of South Shoshone adding to the massive disturbance causing the wild horses to move to the west side.

67 (26 Stallions, 25 Mares, and 16 Foals) were captured and 2 more died. BLM said 3 y/o, Bay, mare, died, traumatic head injury, 2 y/o, Bay, mare, died, undiagnosed. BLM is placing all the undiagnosed in the non gather-related category.
Day 13 Holding.
We have not viewed and handling of captive wild horses at the temporary corrals. Even though the corrals are on oublic lands, BLM is denying historic access.
This is really hard on many of our team members that know these horses… and know these mares and babies. All of them are being shipped off to a facility that has held the record for the most deaths annually more often than any other facility.
