Fuel for the Fight, The Senate Votes Against US Horse Slaughter

The Senate Appropriations Committee just voted to keep funding for USDA inspections of horse slaughter plants PROHIBITED. The amendment, introduced by Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) and co-sponsored by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would keep horse slaughter plants from reopening in the US because the plants could not sell the meat for human consumption without inspection. (If you do not understand what horse slaughter looks like in reality of damage to communities and economically, see here:  http://www.nashvillescene.com/news/article/13033518/former-mayor-horse-slaughterhouses-a-drain-on-taypayers-never-mind-the-ditches-of-blood Note, the link s not to graphic images of horses being slaughtered, but to a letter penned by former Mayor of Kaufmann Texas, Paula Bacon).

This is a powerful sign that we may yet see this push to kill our domestics and wild ones stopped.

PLEASE be aware that this does not stop the Amendment from Chris Stewart (R-UT) to kill tens of thousands of wild horses in holding facilities. That amendment, based on fictions perpetuated by both federal officials and those representing livestock interest, passed the House and is still set for debate in Senate. (However on another note we are hearing “rumblings” that the issues surrounding this push to kill wild ones may take center stage and derail it).

YOU have all been amazing. So many of you have joined the webinars or read the articles and taken extremely appropriate actions. This IS a moment to be proud. NEVER forget your voice matters.

No matter how these votes go, it is never over.

This post will update with more info soon.

We have been working to get relevant information to the Senate on wild horses. It has been a long day. Keep up your calls to your Senators and committee members. We must stop the Stewart Amendment.
