On October 24th Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge held a “public observation day” of the last 100 horses in the holding facility. Of the 415 horses captured this year “observation” was only allowed of the last 100.

These horses are awaiting shipment to one of two contractor’s; Carr’s of Tennessee or J&S in Mississippi. J&S is the contractor that was investigated by Sheldon earlier this year after a member of the public sent documentation to Director John Kasbohm of inappropriate treatment of horses and that horses were disappearing. Despite Kasbohm’s own investigation confirming many of the allegations made, Sheldon is still shipping horses to J&S.

The “observation day” (not allowed up to pens and had to shoot from a distance of more than 50 ft) was part of their claim to the court that they are providing access. As no observation was allowed earlier no assessment of care for the time horses spent at Sheldon can be made. As no handling was done, no assessment of handling can be made. We can assess that on Oct 24th horses were eating and drinking.
